Truth be told, it shouldn’t take you more than a year to learn the American Accent. In fact, there are success stories of people who learn the American Accent in less than six months – but you don’t even have to be extraordinarily gifted in terms of pronunciation and language in general in order to learn the American Accent.
Do you know why?
Because, very simply put, speaking with an American Accent is the most efficient way of speaking English. In other words, native American Speakers speak using this accent because for them, it is very easy to do.
“So why isn’t it easy for me?” You might ask?
Again, the answer to this question is as plain as day. The reason that you are having problems with trying to imitate American Speech is because you weren’t born speaking and constantly being exposed (listening) to the American Accent. Now there are some examples of people who were not born in America, Canada or some other English-speaking territory that make use of a neutral American Accent, but who can speak with a very native-sounding American Accent, but that’s because either:
- The person has been exposed to American cartoons and TV shows at a very young age.
- This person has actually taken the effort to learn the American Accent.
Fortunately, even if you do not fall under number 1, (you weren’t exposed to American English as a child) it’s never too late for you to take the time to consciously learn the American Accent. With consistent study and dedication, it shouldn’t take you more than a year to acquire a steady, fluent and neutral American Accent – so don’t delay!
Start your accent training right now. Remember that you will never get anything done if you don’t take that crucial first step. At this stage in your life, you have probably already gone through mandatory education (elementary and high school) and most of you have probably already graduated from University or are even pursuing graduate school studies. Let me reassure you that while it’s not exactly easy, learning the American Accent is a breeze (too easy) compared to what you have already studied to get to this point in your life.
2016! Make this the year that you acquire your American Accent.
